freelance / Contract web designer
Hi there, welcome to manchesterwebdesigner.com. I'm Tom Harrop, a Manchester based freelance web deisgner. Points awarded for observation.
I spend my days designing websites, web interfaces, logos, stationery, programming web applications, mobile websites, mobile apps and fixing my mum's mates computers.
I began designing and programming websites and online apps almost 10 years ago, and have since since worked on a wide veriety of projects from e-commerce sites with an overall spend of tens of thousands of pounds, to simple promotional websites for local businesses.
I find equal enjoyment in projects of all sizes and enjoy working alongside other web designers and software programmers.

websites for direct clients
Since my first paid website 8 years ago at the age of 16 I've been making websites for all sorts of businesses and other tpyes of direct clients.
Approaching me directly is a great cost saving exercise as I have low overheads, which often means that you can get a more impressive finished product within budget. Unfortunately, if you've already employed me through another company who I freelance for I can't just "do it as a foreigner on the cheap" as nice as that sounds.
I create good looking, practical websites that provide a perfect information gateway for yourcompany. If you want a website that introduces what you do to the world, or if you want to sell your products online we can help you launch a website that is both aesthetically pleasing and perfectly engineered.
As we all know the proof in the pudding is in the eating; so whilst you're here why not check out my portfolio for recent work examples.
Some cool reasons my web design service rocks:
- Well Designed - I won't go ahead until you sign off the design. If you don't like it, send it back and I'll swiftly start again.
- Easy for you to update - Need to change something? Log in to your site and DIY.
- Easy for us to update - If you're lazy, or simply too busy, we can do it for you.
- Set quotes - If the price has to change I discuss it with you.
- No salesman - I'm just a web designer. No sketchy aftershave, no sharp suits.
- Personal Service - Become my friend, come round for a brew, buy me a beer?
Make me part of your team [for a bit]
There's 2 types of freelancing in this game.
The first is what you want when you're a company who provides services which could be complimented by web design. This might be graphic design, video production, advertising, marketing or PR. If you would like to start offering web design as an extra service so that you can be sure your clients are being treated correctly I'm more than happy to work on behalf of your company, and the client would never have any reason to know I'm not full time.
The other kind of freelancing is what I do most, and what I like to refer to as being a 'web design mercenary'.
As a mercinery web designer I can assist or lead your existing web design / development team and compliment their skills with my own. I bring years of experience, during which I've figured out the best ways to develop in a time saving manner, increasing profitability. For a proper chat please get in touch, but if you're wondering about what I know, check the list of cool things below:
- HTML, CSS, JS
- jQuery, Prototype
- Wordpress (custom plugins / themes / buddypress)
- Mobile Development (from any PHP platform inc Wordpress)
- App Development
- Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator CS5
- LAMP Maintenance/setup
Below is a few slides of my recent design work, both online and in the real world. Unfortunately I can't use this format to show off how good my programming skills are, so if you'd like to talk tech please contact me.
